Context
Fragmented provider data was blocking client growth
Early in my career, I saw an opportunity to help transform a healthcare software company from a services business built around custom client projects into a scalable SaaS organization.
The business had grown through highly tailored implementations for healthcare organizations, but this model limited scalability and created increasing delivery complexity over time.
A key underlying challenge in the market was fragmented provider data, which made it difficult for organizations to maintain accurate, up-to-date information across systems.
Approach
One platform for aggregation, workflows, and validation
I defined the vision for a configurable healthcare data management platform designed to solve provider data fragmentation while enabling scalable SaaS delivery.
The platform enabled organizations to:
-
Aggregate provider data from multiple sources
-
Manage updates through structured workflows
-
Allow providers to maintain their own information
-
Route changes through configurable approval processes
-
Distribute validated data across downstream systems
I led product strategy from vision through delivery, including discovery, UX direction, roadmap definition, and cross-functional execution across engineering and customer-facing teams.
A key design challenge was balancing standardization for scalability with flexibility for customer-specific workflows, without relying on custom development.
Execution
Balancing standardization with customer flexibility
The core work involved translating a fragmented, manual process into a structured, scalable product experience.
This included:
-
Designing configurable workflows that adapted to different governance models
-
Supporting multi-stage review and approval workflows across multiple user roles
-
Building support for multi-source data ingestion and validation
-
Ensuring usability for non-technical users managing high-stakes data
-
Creating a platform foundation that could support future product expansion
We needed to move beyond digitizing existing processes and instead create a reusable platform layer for long-term growth.
Outcomes
Primary revenue driver within two years
Within two years:
-
The platform became the primary revenue driver for the organization
-
It supported expansion into a broader SaaS product portfolio
-
It contributed to acquisition and subsequent integration into a larger healthcare technology organization
-
It remained a foundational system in active use for nearly a decade
More importantly, it enabled the shift from project-based delivery to a scalable SaaS operating model.
Reflection
Solving the customer problem also built the business
This experience reinforced a principle that has shaped much of my product leadership career: the most valuable products solve a customer problem while also creating leverage for the business.
What began as a solution to fragmented provider data ultimately reshaped how the organization built, delivered, and scaled software. By replacing custom development with a configurable platform, we created value for customers while establishing a foundation for long-term growth.
